Activity Mafex is the Spanish Rail Industry Association. Its main objective is to represent and defend the interests of the Spanish Rail Industry in general, and our current 122 members in particular, through the implementation of actions related to strategic intelligence, international promotion, trade policy, sectoral forums, working groups, R&D project office, innovation, talent, institutional relations, marketing and communications. Mafex is widely supported by the experience and prestige of the Agex Group Federation, of which it is a member. Mafex is also a prominent member of CEOE (Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations), UNIFE (European Railway Industry Association), PTFE (Spanish Railways Technological Platform), AET (Spanish Transport Association) and ERCI (European Rail Cluster Innitiative). It actively collaborates with entities such as the Ministry of Transports and Sustainable Mobility, Adif, Renfe, Ministry of Industry and Tourism, The Spanish Railway Foundation, Metrotenerife, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), Alamys, UITP, Icex and Basque Government among others.

Main products and services

Mafex has conducted different working groups which are aligned with the strategic objectives of the Association: the reinforcement of internationalization, competitiveness of our members and the intensification of the representation of the Spanish rail sector.

Thanks to the services offered by Mafex, we foster collaboration amongst our members and contribute to the identification of new business opportunities, also reinforcing the sector’s positioning. We also lead direct and inverse trade delegations, the Spanish pavilion in main rail/mobility exhibitions worldwide, and the creation and implementation of in-house services.

With the aim of supporting the competitiveness of member companies, making them more innovative and technologically advanced, Mafex works towards the identification of calls at national and European level, boosting and managing consortia, implementing technological and non-technological project proposals and encouraging the participation of the member companies in R&D projects.

In addition, different sectoral forums, workshops and events are also organised to promote networking amongst main stakeholders.

Institutional representation plays a key role in conveying the industry’s needs and priorities to public administrations and national and international organizations, fostering public-private dialogue and strengthening the positioning of the Spanish rail industry within the main forums for decision-making and sector development.

Finally, Mafex carries out an intense work in communication and marketing to promote the sector and its members both at national and international level, as well as to present and represent in different forums of interest for the rail sector.

Top products: BUSINESS ASSOCIATIONS:  1. Organization in international exhibitions and congresses.  2. Co-creation Study.  3. Forums.

Activities by year

The year 2025 has been particularly significant for Mafex. The Association presented the co-creation study “Challenges, Strengths and Future Needs of the Spanish Railway Sector”, a report promoted by Mafex with the participation of six ministries of the Spanish public administration and leading experts from the railway industry. The study identifies five major strategic pillars for the future of the sector: internationalization, innovation and digital transformation, industrial competitiveness and talent, decarbonization, and freight transport. It also highlights the importance of strengthening public-private collaboration to address global market challenges and consolidate Spain’s position as a leading railway benchmark in Europe.

The implementation of Mafex’s new Strategic Plan 2025–2028 also began, a roadmap that defines the association’s priorities for the coming years with the aim of strengthening the competitiveness of the Spanish railway industry and its internationalization.

The international area was one of the core pillars of Mafex’s activity throughout the year. The coordinated participation of Spanish companies in leading trade exhibitions such as Global Rail Abu Dhabi), Saudi Rail & Mobility (Riyadh) and TransMea (New Cairo) helped showcase the strength and potential of the sector. In particular, the 9th International Rail Convention stands out, which was held in May in Seville with the support of ICEX Spain Trade and Investment, and brought together representatives from railway organizations across 30 countries and 50 Spanish companies. Over the course of three days, Mafex organized more than 800 B2B meetings among participants, as well as a conference programme and technical visits in collaboration with ADIF, Renfe, and Seville Metro.

Additionally, a new edition of Rail Live! was held in Madrid in congress format, drawing over 9,000 attendees and 300 speakers. The event was supported by Mafex in its organization and involved the collaboration of Adif, Renfe, ICEX Spain Export and Investment, the Spanish Railways Foundation (FFE), the Spanish Railway Technology Platform (PTFE), the Community of Madrid, the Madrid City Council and Metro de Madrid.

Business delegations were also organized to Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Italy, facilitating the opening of new markets and direct engagement with potential international partners. These missions have reinforced the internationalization strategy of the Spanish railway industry.

From a strategic intelligence standpoint, the Intelligence Plaza platform has been consolidated as an essential tool for member companies, providing up-to-date sectoral analysis and added value for decision-making. At the same time, several Sectoral Forums focused on digitalization, sustainability, and international markets were successfully held, fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and networking within the railway ecosystem.

In the field of innovation, Mafex launched a new project, adding to three others already underway, and developed a Technology Agenda as an extension of the 2021–2024 Strategic Plan. This document, prepared in collaboration with members, identifies technological challenges and opportunities for the railway industry and serves as a roadmap for future development.

Mafex's commitment to sustainability was strengthened through the expansion of its services, including carbon footprint calculation, as well as the promotion of sustainable solutions developed by its member companies. These actions not only ensure compliance with current regulations but also position the railway industry as a benchmark in responsible practices and the generation of shared value.

In the area of communication, the Mafex Magazine was further consolidated as an international outreach platform, with high levels of participation from member companies, published news, and in-depth features on current topics. In addition, sector-specific reports and press releases were produced, and communication and marketing actions were carried out through various channels, including media outlets and social networks.
