Activities by year

Activities in 2021: Talgo continued to consolidate its international presence with new contracts abroad like Denmark, Egypt or Uzbekistan, while it and testing of the first Talgo Avril units from Renfe which will be delivered throughout this year.

The following projects stand out:

Avril Renfe (Spain). In 2016 and 2017 the national operator Renfe awarded Talgo a contract to supply 30 Talgo Avril trains and their maintenance up to 30 years. Avril has a novel internal distribution 3 + 2 to increase capacity without reducing passenger comfort. Part of the trains will mount an automatic track-gauge changing system for very high-speed (300 km/h), for the first time in history. Dynamic tests are currently undergoing.

Avril Adif (España). Spain rail infrastructure manager Adif awarded Talgo the supply of an inspection train able to operate at up to 330 km/h on the high-speed rail network, and also on conventional lines thanks to its automatic track-gauge changing system. The first unit will have two multi-system power heads with a total power of 8,000 kW for just six coaches. The contract includes the train, the interior monitoring equipment and its maintenance during a 5-year period.

Talgo 230 DB (Germany). In 2019 Talgo signed a contract with Deutsche Bahn to manufacture up to 100 Talgo 230 intercity trains, with an initial order for 23 units which are now in the final engineering phase and are expected to enter revenue service in 2023. Those units include locomotives and cab-cars, have a maximum speed of 230 kph and will be used by DB in domestic and international long-distance routes like the one connecting Berlin (Germany) with Amsterdam (Netherlands).

Talgo 230 DSB (Denmark). Danish operator DSB awarded Talgo with a framework contract in early 2020 under which an initial batch of 8 intercity Talgo 230 trains will be delivered in 2023. These wide-body trains will a have capacity of 440 passengers and a maximum speed of 200 km/h.

Over the past few years, Talgo has confirmed its intention to implement a long-term industrial plan in the United Kingdom. It already has a commercial office in London and has selected a site at Longannet (Scotland) to build a factory. Talgo is not focused only on the very high-speed segment in the UK.

Intercity ENR (Egypt) Talgo will deliver to the Egyptian operator ENR 6 trains, each composed of a locomotive and 14 cars, and will be in charge of their maintenance during 8 years.

Talgo is currently focusing its innovation activity on a four-pillar approach: digitalization, sustainable mobility, optimization of passenger experience and innovation enhancement.

Within each line, the company has been working on key projects which show our deep commitment to improving the future of the railway sector. For example, implementation of Artificial intelligence techniques and Machine Learning into predictive maintenance operations and development of a smart maintenance platform are among the latest advancements performed by our company towards digitalization.

As for sustainable mobility, Talgo’s contribution consists in the development and manufacture of a new dual train Vittal ONE with a Hydrogen fuel cell, intended to further reduce the minimal negative environmental impact produced by the railway, connecting places environmentally sustainable.

Another line of investigation and projects in course are centered on continuous passenger experience improvement, namely, better accessibility, higher levels of comfort and safety, and customized travel experiences.

In pursuit of these strategic objectives, Talgo is working closely with different startups. This allows for times and costs reduction, as well as for the creation of an agile innovation, connecting the company with the latest technological developments of the market and pushing forward our own innovation.

Areas Talgo is present in more than 40 countries around the world, including Spain, Germany, United Kingdom, Denmark Russia, USA, Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
