construction methods that have multiplied assembly perfor-
mance by five. The track fastenings or the rail welds them-
selves have been improved. And it has innovated with new
foreign object detection systems, which are now present in
our lines.
In addition, a network management tool has been
created that is called the DaVinci system, owned by Adif and
developed by Indra, which is a landmark in rail traffic since it
integrates all of a control centre’s systems into a single appli-
cation. Several countries have already implemented it.
Every day more than 6,000 trains are operated in
Spain, of which 1,000 are high-speed trains and serve about
80% of the population. Cantabria, La Rioja, Euskadi and Na-
varre will join the new network while the Mediterranean and
Atlantic corridors are accelerating, with projects such as the
new line between Seville and Huelva being launched.
It is true that we have problems, but most of them
are linked to growth, rather than investment. The fleet’s age
will soon cease to be a problem since its modernisation is
Óscar Puente Santiago underway. More than 500 new trains will arrive. Of the to-

which are the commuter trains that channel the daily mobili-
ty of millions of Spaniards.
The plan for new stations is underway, which in-
cludes those of Chamartín, La Sagrera, Sants or that of Va-
lladolid. There is also the deployment of rolling highways,
a winning alliance between trains and ports to decarbonise
transport and improve the competitiveness of companies.
The birth of the railway broke down borders and
promoted the world’s first cultural globalization. Today, it is
still more than just a means of transport; it is our great ally
in the fight against climate change. And in Spain, to the di-
sappointment of some, it is experiencing the best moment
in its history.
re and technologically advanced ecosystem with which we
have built the second-most extensive high-speed network in
the world.
Half a century ago, nothing foreshadowed such a
deployment. We are a leader in gauge changer technology
and shifting rolling systems. We are pioneers in the imple-
mentation of ERTMS, which ensures interoperability and the
use of trains from different manufacturers, which is key to
liberalisation. In fact, we are the country with the most kilo-
metres equipped with this system (close to 3,000).
